Cephalopods (squids and octopuses) have been making ink for millions of years. A squirt of ink into the water to confuse predators and make their escape has been a cephalopod survival strategy that’s unique in the animal kingdom. Also unique is the brilliant rainbow of colors that cephalopods can exhibit.
